SPECIES DESCRIPTION
CENTRANTHUS SIEBERI    

Family and Genus:- See- VALERIANACEAE/Sect. CENTRANTHUS.

Common Name:- None

Homotypic Synonyms:- Centranthus longiflorus, Centranthus nevadensis ssp.
sieberi, Valeriana angustifolia.

Meaning:- Centranthus (Gr) Spur-flower.
                  Sieberi (L) For the botanist Franz Wilhelm Sieber (1785-1844).

General description:- Herbaceous, caespitose plant. With a largely underground
woody stock

Stems:-
1) (5-)10-20 cm, erect, simple or branched only at base. Flowering stems with 2-6
    cauline leaves.

Leaves:-
1) (10-)20-40 x c..5 mm, linear-oblanceolate, usually obtuse.

Flowers:-
1) Partial inflorescences, several, mostly oblong.
2) Corolla, dull pinkish,
    a) tube, (11-)12-14 mm.
    b) spur, 13-17 mm
 
Fruit:-
1) Achenes, with a persistent feathery calyx.

Key features:-
1) Stems, usually not more than 20 cm, simple or branched only at base
2) Flowering stems, with 2-6 cauline leaves.

Habitat:- Rocky limestone flats, cliff ledges and coarse gravel screes. 1700-2200
m.

Distribution:- Cretan endemic, restricted to a small area in the Lefka Ori. Rare.

Flowering time:- May to Aug.
